Neila - Burgos - Spain

Laguna Negra - Neila The picture on the left belongs to the Laguna Negra (The Dark Lake), not the well known in the Spanish province of Soria, but the other in Burgos a few kilometres away, nearest Neila. Is a lake of glaciar origin included in a group of lakes formed on the north face of the Sierra of Neila while the maximun glaciarism was affecting The Iberian Peninsula 18000 years ago, being the limits in this area (the Sierra of Neila, Demanda and Urbión) and resulting in these glaciar circus. As was pointed out, while in the north face has been formed the lakes at diferent levels presenting important slopes, in the south faces appears soft slopes with no lakes. These lakes are affecting Triasic materials, where can be observed great blocks of sandstone presenting crossthrought stratification and fragments with important bioturbation.

Glaciar Processes In this other picture taken on the top of the mountain -around 2050 mts-, we can see a group of Triasic rocks affected by gelifraction or gelivation, arranged in a circle. In this case, the break point follows the stratification plane, the place where the water use to inflitrate, when the water in these planes is frozzen (increase in volume) acts as wedge producing the rock breaking. In this area are frecuent water sources as result of the ice melting running under the sandstone blocks that ends.

Aside the geological considerations, if we go to see the slight swamped areas where the melted waters runs, we should be specially careful when some snow areas yet exists and avoid to cross them, since, this snow, normally, is covering hidden streams (50cms. or 1 mts. of depth) where we can fall.
